much less charming and cute than it thinks it is. HOW does a 500 page book have an unsatisfying ending?? MUCH too flowery language and too much explanation of the wrong things!!! a good idea annoyingly executed.

Have you ever simultaneously rooted for and against every character at the same time? Because I did while reading this book. All the characters are tragically flawed and terrible people just trying to be the best and earn the approval of their father who is now dead. Narrated by an all seeing “God” the characters must confront their pasts and look towards their futures as preparations are being made for their father’s will to be read.

I loved the witty and sarcastic humor of the writing and narration of this book the most. I loved trying to root for these terrible characters and in the end learning all the reasons for why they turned out to be the way they are. I loved seeing all the pieces of this story come together and all the twists and turns it took. This really was a great book and if you love to hate characters and love books with complicated family dynamics then this is such a good one for you.

A character study disguised as fantasy (barely), where every sibling is painfully insecure, ambitious, and constantly self-sabotaging—but it makes for a strangely compelling read.

The magical elements are light, but the emotional chaos runs deep. Not a cozy or likeable story, but one that sticks with you.
