I'm always so intrigued by Olivie Blake's writing. it is always distinctive and interesting...at least at first. this book is maybe the least insufferable of the ones I've read...most of the others spend a lot of bandwidth using $5 words and trying to twist the prose to sound smart (doesn't always work!). this feels much more approachable, but at the same time, I found it to be a bit boring at times so maybe her little overwrought prose trick is her only trick at the moment? often too cutesy and of a moment. not dark enough for my taste. also fuck the amount of cliches about the political climate and the super heavy-handed pro-electoral politics stuff. oh my god a single "good" politician is not going to fix a system STFU IM GONNA [redacted]

I enjoyed this book A LOT.
The writing style was funny, new, goofy as fuck and just insane in so many ways
The characters were also very insane in a Succession meets the supernatural way. Rich people problems am I right? But seriously all the characters had incredible arcs, development made sense and was very satisfying at the end (also calling the epilogue 2 gifted 2 talented? Genius)
I think Olivie Blake depicts what it’s like to have been a gifted child in a remarkable way. I can relate extremely to Meredith in that (not in all the rest tho, just the being a genius as a child and not being a perfect adult part. I’m not a billionaire CEO)
Also the supernatural element resonated with me as someone who grew up with Latin magical realism, it was cool in a very Isabel Allende way.
My only note is that the book starts soooo slow. For 200 pages nothing happens then some stuff happens for the next 150 and then the last pages are actually plot. But other than that love.

PS: favorite characters are Lou, Monster, Gillian and Yves.
