only picked this up because a co-worker is related to the author and she had free copies.

awful.

i wanted to stop after page 5, but somehow managed to press onward to page 65, when i just couldn't take it any more. it was like the bad writing just lulled me into a hypnotic reading trance.

there is nothing at all redeeming about the narrator - she isn't insightful in a mean way, she's just mean and shallow and utterly ridiculous.

i read a few other reviews and discovered that SOMETHING BIG HAPPENED and i tried to skim to find THE EVENT, but ultimately, I DID NOT GIVE A FLYING FUCK about this character, any of these characters, or the story. which is pretty amazing. still don't know what happens. still don't care.

I really wasn’t feeling it. I watched the tv show or movie a long time ago and couldn’t even care to remember what happens in the end.

This book was difficult for me to get into, mostly because the main character (Ani) was mean, and looked down at everyone else. The book reveals the impact Ani's past had in shaping her, but I never felt her present-day actions were justified by those past experiences.

Bouncing between Ani's past and present kept my interest for the big secret to be revealed, but the payoff wasn't great. It felt like a lot of buildup for several traumatic events, over a quarter of the book, rather than my assuming it was one event. The events were certainly shocking, and I appreciated the book took on such big, important topics. However, I didn't like how it was presented in such a self-image-preservation type way. The ending felt vindicating, but also oddly abrupt.

Essentially, my main sticking points were Ani's terribly mean personality, and the over-inflated buildup to a drawn out climax, with an unsatisfying resolution.
