Written in 1994, still disappointingly relevant today. The second half of the book, from Fargo, North Dakota and on were the best. Not so much of a human and dog bonding story as it is a humans of America story.

Best opener of any book. Period. And as in his novels, he's one of the true kings of the sentence.

Very much trailed off for me though... and the doubts surrounding the truth of the journey do bitter the aftertaste. His own son apparently said he just sat in the camper and made it all up. I don't know, maybe I'm being harsh. I'm tired and suffering from food poisoning and am maybe sour with the world. If the book had ended after part 3, as he wanders off into the darkness, surrounded by empty bottles, I'd probably have put it together with Muse on the sadly brilliant shelf, but alas.

This was such a lovely surprise. It was delectable. My favourite thing I've read by Steinbeck so far. I am so glad I was able to read and own this book. I adored it.
