While I love Steinbeck, his imagined characters are better than himself. :I
Parts were nice--I loved the bit about the redwoods and Charlie just peeing on a stick--and parts made him sound a bit like a sexist prick.

Love Steinbeck. This travelogue reminded me of Mark Twain's travelogues, but in a different era.

This book is special to me because John Steinbeck and his poodle Charley remind me so much of my beloved Uncle and his goldendoodle Shakey. I read the book and was going to send my Uncle a copy, but he died in a car accident before I got around to it. I'm going to keep a copy as a reminder of two men (Steinbeck and my Uncle) who loved traveling, justice, equality, his family and friends and their loyal dogs.
Enjoyable book. A different side of Steinbeck that’s quite refreshing. A lot of his descriptions of America are quite timeless and could easily describe today. Loved Charley and Steinbecks interaction with people. Made me think of Bill Bryson trying to reconnect with America in his book as well.
Be sure to read the introduction as some great tidbits. Love Steinbeck’s description of the natural world. His prose about what it was like to see the redwoods in California was beautiful.

It was so interesting to read his thoughts on the country as he drove around in 1960. I love the section on Montana where he says he can objectivly write about the state because he is in love with it and you can be objective when you are in love. He also had some good points about Texas too....not that they changed my thoughts on the state. I'm glad I read this right before my own travels with my doggies. I'm so excited to road trip right now!
A nice tour with thought-provoking and still-relevant insights.

Road trip across America with my dog? Yup. I’m in. Love viewing the country through another’s eyes. Steinbeck is skilled with words.
