Wonderful travelogue, but also great social commentary much of which, sadly, stands up today, although it's reassuring to know that the nature of America has always been to be suffering together apart from each other. He also has some beautiful Ruby Bridges reporting. A really amazing book.

This is a narrative nonfiction story about John Steinbeck's 1960 cross-country journey in a custom truck, Rocinante and his standard poodle, Charley.

The author was a man after my own heart. In 1960 he took a 10,000 mile roadtrip with his poodle, Charley. Steinbeck embarked on this journey to reconnect with the country and understand its people during a time of cultural and political change.

They drove a custom-made camper truck, “Rocinante” (named after Don Quixote’s horse), starting from his home in Long Island, New York. Over several months, they traveled across the country, from small towns to major cities, talking to folks about their reality. There were joyous times and infuriating ones. Steinbecks handled it all with aplomb. The man could write.

Sadly this is my first Steinbeck. I will rectify this. I suspect he would have been a great friend. It’s the best travelogue I’ve ever read. 9/10

The master of observation. You will come to know American by reading Steinbeck's descriptions of its people.

I had a feeling I would like this book. I've liked all the Steinbeck that I've read. But the nice surprise is that I not only liked it, I loved it. I wish my memory was rich enough to save all the quotes, phrases, and descriptions Steinbeck wrote as I travel through America and life. I guess that's why they invented re-reading
