I’m shocked to have found not even a single review mentioning the repeated use of the “n” slur. I understand this book was written in 1962, and the author himself wasn’t “actually saying it”, but I’ve seen reviewers absolutely trash other books for far less.
In my opinion, this book is overhyped. There’s nothing groundbreaking, or even really very insightful or thoughtful about it

Delightful read and an interesting snapshot in time, lots to reflect on about the American story.
Eloquent and very moving. Slightly dated, but a wonderful glimpse of the USA in 1960. Steinbeck is awesome!.
While John Steinbeck novels are hardly ever in the top ten books of all time, they always slap. I loved this humorous travel account across America that really shows a lot of the problems we have in our country now still existed years ago. I highly recommend the audiobook as I read it while running and it made me feel like I was adventuring--or something. Also, is no one going to talk about how Steinbeck has to be one of the first writer's to create a metaverse where he inserts himself into East of Eden as some distant relative and then makes himself the main character of this novel, referencing his fictional relatives in the aforementioned book?
“I’m in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection. But with Montana it is love. And it’s difficult to analyze love when you’re in it.”
Steinback won my eternal admiration with this one line in Travels with Charley. I've known the quote since I was a child, and when I finally read the book, I found much more than validation about my own love for my home state. An excellent read for anyone with wanderlust or who can appreciate a good road trip.

Simple straight forward writing and very successful self-editing make the book rich, believable, multi-layered and a fine read. Can't believe I waited this long to take another trip with Steinbeck.
