For a brief moment in time, the reading of Travels with Charley was in alignment with my own age and that of Steinbeck's when he traveled across America with his dog. Furthermore, his travels took place around the time of my birth. What a perfect opportunity to look back at what America was like when I joined the ride. Granted, the view from a white man in the early 1960's is not the same as what many others might have seen at the time and there were moments when I cringed at his characterizations. But very interesting, nonetheless. All in all, Steinbeck's humor and humanity made for an enjoyable and though-provoking read.

my favorite steinbeck book...

Ok storygraph fuckssss I liked the start of the book, but the ending was very rushed and seemed like he gave up on writing it. Which he literally says, he just wanted to get home and was tired of the adventure and stopped paying attention. But the mundane moments, the hours stretching on without seeing much of anything is the whole point of cross country road trips. I would think such an accomplished writer would make that mundanity still seem beautiful and intriguing. It kinda pissed me off he just gave up. Every corner of every state is worth exploring in my opinion. I wish I had more time on my most recent roadtrip. But very reflective and a cool snapshot to life in rural America in the 60’s. Some important conversations were recorded

Interesting to see the similarities in 1960's America to 2024--particularly the danger inherent in political discourse. A lot of warm feelings reading Steinbeck's description of his dog and their relationship.

When I think Steinbeck I think bleak, gut-punch, tough going. This is not that. It’s funny and entertaining and it’s shot through with heart and compassion. I could have read another 100 pages of this quite happily.
