It took me a while to get into this book but after a fair bit I started to get really invested in the Stephanides family. Don’t expect twist and turns every two pages, but expect instead great character development, a very unique coming of age story and the traumas a family keeps dragging with it. I recommend if you’re in the mood for reflection and digging deep.

I picked this up at a time when I was anxious to read good quality fiction on LGBT+ themes and I definitely hit jackpot. It is a wonderfully crafted story, spanning three generations, that touches on almost everything people in the community go through or have gone through (since the 'present day' narrative is set in the 1970s). The encounter of Greek and American cultures is both beautifully described and almost painfully realistic and part of what makes this family's story so grabbing. Definitely worth re-reading.
