I know this is a groundbreaking book and I understand why, but I think all of it’s accolades come from the fact that it’s content and plot were revolutionary for its time. The story itself is dull. I don’t know how a book about a hermaphrodite could be dull, but it was. It was about 250 pages too long and I was bored through most of it.

Rereading October 2022:
It got even better. That ending always makes me cry.

Easy to read and hard to put down towards the end. Spent all day finishing it today. Fantastic family of characters. Especially Desdemona, the yia yia.

While it was slow at times, it was overall a wonderful read. I would have liked to have read more about Cal's transition to living as a man and a little less, perhaps, about Desdemona and Lefty (even though I really enjoyed their part of the story, as well- I just figure either cut a little or add another 100-150 pages to the book!). Anyway... excellent book. A little slow here and there, but overall fully enjoyable.

I had a hard time getting into this book the first time I picked it up. Six months later, I tried again and couldn't put it down. Loved it.

I really wanted to like this book. I mean it won a Pulitzer for crying out loud but needless to say I couldn't even finish it. It was boring and drawn out. It was more so one of those books where you feel the author is trying to sound important rather than tell a story.

The subject matter was compelling enough for it to be interesting but it went on and on rather than moving forward. I felt myself saying enough already way too often while reading this book. Had this book been edited better I probably would have liked it better or even finished it. I am hoping it got better further into the story, but looking at how much was left and how it dragged I just couldn't finish.
