"I can you show you the world."

S.A. Chakraborty takes us on a magical carpet ride to see the amazing world she created with her beautifully whimsical writing in her epic fantasy book that gives me all the Aladdin vibes.
The City of Brass is my first adult historical- fantasy and trust me when I say it was daunting delving into this story. I think for anyone picking up an adult fantasy novel for the first time would be too. The first half of this book read slow, but I feel it needed to be to capture the brilliant world building that was achieved. I've never really seen such vivid world building and I now know it's something to look out and be excited for in a very well done adult fantasy read. The authors writing really brought to life the beautiful Egyptian lands and Daveabad, the beautiful brass city that the title depicts.
Not only was the world building outstanding the characters are so well developed. Where our main characters are of course centre of attention you also get to know the background characters very well and they all play such an important role within this story.

Nahari, who is our main protagonist is a thief and a con-artist and she gives me such Aladdin vibes but better. She is such a bad-ass female main character that we always love to see in an epic fantasy like this one. Ali, our prince. We always have to have some royal love interest don't we. I like Ali, not as much as other characters but he's the type of character that grows on you and you learn to love. He does sometimes feel like your very typical, kind-hearted prince who has troubles doing the acts of kindness he does to follow the laws of his kingdom. Dara, is our tragically beautiful djinn warrior. I've compared him to the genie but without the excessive humour, because where Dara could have some, he's been through so much during his many years alive that he seems to lack emotions, that is until Nahari summons him.

This was a brilliant start into adult fantasy for me and I'm super excited to finish the trilogy. Some of the best and well developed story I've read due to the richness of the world that the author brings to life.

Are you wanting to try out adult fantasy for the first time? Then this one is a good start as it’s also not as long as most adult fantasy novels.

I would have loved this when I was 14.

I do not understand how this is not labeled as young adult fiction.  The protagonists and tropes are very YA, and the American narrator made it feel like a cartoon. This is not a bad thing, just very different from the tone I expected .

To someone who, I think, was not the target audience, the plot was occasionally boring, the romance  (I am sorry) cringeworthy, and the narration made me feel like a usamerican teacher were reading to the class. The only thing that kept me listening at times was the fact that I already had the book.

The story did, however, get more interesting as it went on.

…I will probably listen to the next books…
