One of my favorite reads of 2023.

I just don't get the hype. Its clearly just photos from instagram with a short sentence about the photo. Didn't do much for me. Maybe if you are a big Patti Smith fan it will feel inspirational.

The photos are not high art, but the captions Patti provides really give you a sense of her past and present, which is especially enjoyable if you are familiar with some of her previous work. Some (but not all) of the things you just might find yourself pondering by the end of A Book of Days:

The atomic bomb
Old leather boots
Brothers
Mothers
Daughters
William S. Burroughs
Coffee
Cigarettes
Cats
Kafka
Gardening
Suicide
Poetry
Dylan
Ginsburg
Plath
Punk music
Notebooks
Polaroids
Proust
Frida Kahlo
MLK
Art
History
Art history
Tableau
Typewriters
Jazz
Rome
Paris
New York
Sam Shepard
Picasso
Jesus
Religious imagery
Holy sites
St. Francis
Just Kids

okay okay okay
what i loved- her words, her descriptions, what each photo meant to her
i LOVED her own photos
what i disliked- other peoples photos i thought it was 100% photographs she's taken it was a little underwhelming to see so many of friends who have passed but not her own pictures of them, i just felt it would've meant more had they all been HER pictures
emotional informative reflective fast-paced
