This book just seemed to drag on forever. I think the author was trying to really show the development of the relationship between the character, but to me it felt like each page contained nothing but brooding and complaining. But then again, it might just be that I'm a stage of my life when I need things to be simple, carefree and easy. Haha! Still this book was so difficult to read. Quite disappointed that it's the ONLY book I chose to bring along on my beach trip.
This was a paranormal YA with a love triangle. Probebly should have known I wasn't going to enjoy it. It didn't do anything for me even when I was a teen my self. The story never picked up for me or was interesting enough. I had about 60 - 100 pages left but completely lost intresset so I DNFED it.
(This review is for the whole series.)
I think this series was beautifully written. I liked that each book seemed to tell a different part of the whole story which involved a lot of different characters and faerie courts. You were really able to get a great image of the world Melissa Marr created and then have it all tied into one big story where everything and everyone was connected in some way. I love the descriptions and details surrounding each of the different courts. Many of the characters developed throughout the series which is something that really attracts and emotionally connects me to the story. I want to see them struggle and change and grow. It was filled with romance, action, and even tragedy. I also thought the ending of the series was perfect! Very satisfied all around.

I really enjoyed this book. I found it was very similar to the iron fey series by Julie kagawa. The principles of the two series' are very alike in many ways. I love the characters and the relationships, I think it was really good and different to not have the heroine fall in love with the hero. All-in-all awesome.
I thought the book was ok, but it stayed at ok. It was not bad, not great, well-written with a gripping story that made me go on. But afterwards it made me thinking, what if it would have been even better in English? Sometimes they just seems to simplify things in translations when it comes to childrens and youth books. I guess I will not know that and it will stay at ok.
I like that this book had a darker tone and sometimes they brushed up against really dark things, those kinds of things that I don't even want to hear about in other books. But it really made this a darker story in it's way. It was a dark world when it came to humans, and it was a dark world where the fairies lived.
I liked Aislinn, I could not do what she does, walk around seeing fairies and not reacting, not even when she sees something awful. As for her friend and love interest Seth, I was kind of blah on him, didn't want to see them together. He could have been made into more, now I just saw him as someone who was there but that I didn't know that much about in the end.
The faeries then, the winter court was cold, I would like to know about that high court, those summer fairies were to lusty, and the dark court, well they are dark, and I want some info on them too. Keenan, him I liked, there was something to hope for. What a nice summer king, and how did he get a mother like that?! As for Donia, I liked the wolf and some things didn't add up in the end. All those girls, and why should anyone be more special in the end? As I said, they were sure lusty at that summer court.
I saw that book 3 is about them again so would be fun to read that one, and book 2 is about that dark king? Sounds cool to me.
This was a book that kept me reading and wondering about how it all would end, and it did surprise me in the end. She did well there, and Melissa Marr is a good author. A YA book worth reading.

meh
Very very young adult. Thought I would like it more than I actually did. You could see the surprises a mile away.

I wanted something fun and light to read after I had read "Sharp Objects" by Gillian Flynn and it destroyed me emotionally. Since this book has been sitting on my shelves since the Twilight boom I figured "Why the heck not" you know? Basically it delivered what I hoped it would "light and kind of fun, but also a bit forgettable."
Aislinn is a girl who can see faeries, a rare ability. She is fearful of the faeries because she has seen them do terrible things to mortals and to other fae all her life. She ignores them mostly until a certain faery takes notice of her, after which her entire life changes. We learn that Aislinn is important and special to the faery world and they need her for their survival.
In general this book wasn't bad. It met the expectations I had for it, which was low honestly, but it still had me captivated as much as it could with a novel where nothing happens.
Characters:
Aislinn: Had no personality other than fear. Forgettable character, kind of cool sometimes though, but ultimately indifferent toward her.
Seth: Had a bit more of a personality than Aislinn, but still forgettable. Basically every 2006/07 girls dream indie/pop punk dude.
Keenan: The blandest character ever probably.
What I liked about this book
- The amount of research poured into this book is something to be noted and admired. Marr definitely did her fair amount of reading for this book which I appreciated.
- The amount of Fae variations in this book where also something I enjoyed a lot. The description of each fae was strong, and had me interested in learning more about them.
- The concept of the book was interesting and strong. Marr created a strong Faery Mythology that was effective and interesting.
- Also...possible consensual polyamory?????? Maybe?????Please???
What I didn't like about this book
- Writing was overly simplistic, and the narration over all confused me. I often had to go back and reread certain pages over because I was so confused from the narration.
- Characters in general were bland. I felt that some of these characters could have been explored way more, but they fell short for me.
- Nothing seemed to happen in this book. Like nothing at all. Even the little conflict there was seemed to be settled pretty fast.
Ultimately if you enjoy books in the same vein as "Twilight" or "Hush Hush" then this book is for you. Fast read with little plot, and kind of forgettable. But hey! it was fun you know sometimes you need some dumb YA to cleanse your palette.

Very interesting. I want to read all the books that she quotes!
