I enjoyed "Live and Let Die" a little less than "Casino Royale". The ending here feels a little bit rushed. Perhaps I expected a more suave solution from Mr. Bond instead of what I got.
I set my mind to read all of the Bond books cos I've enjoyed the Daniel Craig movies...
Whilst I think Fleming is a great writer and I love his method of storytelling, I'm often left feeling uncomfortable due to the occasions of sexism and racism in the books.
I suppose I'll keep reading, though i don't know why.

The most controversial but from a story perspective best James Bond novel I ever read. My favourite book so far this year.

First I read Casino Royale, and I loved it but I thought it was odd to see Bond get captured by some low-level thug and get his ass kicked and tortured. This book is the first Bond Book that feels like a Bond book. Mastermind, beautiful women, hopping from location to location, and he's dangled over a shark pit at one point. Great action, but I miss the pacing of the first book.
Just finished reading Live And Let Die.
Here is my review of Live And Let Die:
It was a Bond book.
3 stars.

This was probably the most forgettable book that I’ve ever read. Stuff happened that I never really cared about, the characters were constantly in “dire situations” that never really felt tense at all, and there was absolutely no reason for me to care about the characters other than one of them being James Bond. I didn’t think that a Bond story could really be boring, but this book proved me wrong about that for sure.
This is Fleming's second Bond book, and quite an exciting and quick read/listen. Bond is still recovering from his Casino Royale adventure when he's thrust into this Jamaica-to-Harlem treasure scheme. His good friend Leiter, the Texan CIA agent, joins the adventure, and he's a worthy companion. Trevor pointed out that Fleming's evil mastermind character starts to take form in this novel--the description of how the mastermind will do away with Bond in a terrifically creative fashion before he actually attempts to do away with him in said creative fashion, heightening the tension before Bond eludes death. Quite satisfying, and we also commented on how well Bond eats throughout the book. Apparently a complete breakfast is an essential part of a secret agent's life.
