I wish a British period drama master (Stephen Poliakoff comes to mind) would be given a huge budget to remake the original Fleming Bond novels in the original '50's-'60's setting.
Having never previously read the original Fleming Bond novels (only watched the movies), I'm amazed at how fluid Fleming's telling is.
What remains of the 1954 Live and Let Die novel in the 1973 Roger Moore farce?
- Mr Big (by ethnicity and name only)
- Harlem (Big's nightclub pretty much as in the novel)
- Solitaire (tarot cards, check, but the Two Lovers trick isn't in the book)
- Florida (by name only)
The movie is set in NY, New Orleans and Haiti, the book in NY, Jacksonville, St. Petersburg and Jamaica.
Both Quarrel and Strangways debuted in this book as Bond's Jamaica crew, but as both were already killed off in the 1962 Dr. No movie, neither can appear the Live and Let Die movie. So there's Quarrel Jr in the movie.
Highly recommended (the book, that is). Please dispose of the ridiculous 1973 movie.

I didn't get the same feel from this book as I did from Casino Royale which I thought was brilliant. There were moments when it was truly gripping, but others when it was offensive and easy to put down.
Excellent listen and very typical James Bond book, is very dated now but that doesn't take away from what is an excellent spy novel at the time and also a great book for any James Bond fan.
