Not nearly as good as Casino Royale. The plot is a little goofier, the racial content is offensive, and the character growth/development pales in comparison to its predecessor.

The language might be problematic nowadays but it was written in the 50s and that was the language of the time. I love Bond movies and this is the first one I've read. I really enjoyed it for a quick read

Its not like the order of the books or reading all of the series matter too much, but my ocd side says I had to read it. After chapter 2 I hated that part of me that much more...

I'd have given it three and a half stars, because Fleming's writing is, as always, fantastic it's very addictive and pulls you in. This story is just not as good as Casino Royal. Solitaire is pretty awful and boring even for a Bond girl. It is an interesting white middle class British look into 1950s America and Harlem especially.

Second of the James Bond novels. It's a thriller, but it's so contrived that it's almost cute; in search of smuggled gold, Bond runs afoul of a huge black torturer/killer/mob boss/voodoo practitioner. Add in the obligatory helpless beautiful female, plenty of goons and elaborate traps... you get the idea.

Fascinating as a Bond fan of the films to see what they used and didn't use from this book and decided to use later, in other Bond films. Overall better than Casino Royale (James Bond #1)

Fantastic. Exciting story by Ian Fleming. Perfect quick read.
