More of an action thriller than one on the grounds of espionage is what I feel after reading the book. It is out rightly racist in its views but considering the social conditions prevalent then, Fleming would have tapped his feet to the same music.
One thing I liked about the character is that even while pulling off feats of exaggerated panache, Bond remains human. A far cry from the James Bond in some of the older movies.

This is just barely a three star work. It's a little slow in the middle and also a little boring, but the first and third acts are entertaining enough to keep it above water. A LOT different from the movie and as ridiculously dated as the movie is, I actually prefer it to this. This is pretty outlandish on all levels, not to mention the inherent racism of the dated plot line, but if you can suspend that part of your brain and just enjoy it for the mindless thrills, it might be right up your alley (or street, as the English say...).
Bond is back! And this time HE's kicking ass.
Casino Royale, although well written and interesting in its approach, was very 'light on action' when it came to the introduction of the British spy, James Bond. We all know what kind of character James Bond is from the films. And in the second book, Live and Let Die (great title), Ian Fleming finally shows us the 'man of action' we all know James Bond to be. Live and Let Die also continued to show the compassionate (passionate) side to James Bond, as he goes out of his way to rescue a 'damsel in distress'. Oh, but don't worry, James Bond can also be a very unlikable person when he needs to be, and sometimes when he doesn't.
The second half of Live and Let Die was much better than the first. Perhaps that's to do with James Bond in Jamaica being a much more interesting scenario than James Bond in 50's New York. The underwater scene, with descriptions on all kinds of sea life, is incredibly illustrative with images flashing before your eyes.
The film Live and Let Die is probably my least favourite of all the James Bond films, but I still enjoy watching it. It's a James Bond film!
The book Live and Let Die, on the whole, is better. It's certainly different enough to warrant a read to those who have only seen the film.
James Bond will return...

This is a very dated book so keep in mind there will be some terms used that are no longer acceptable or appropriate.
It was refreshing to see Bond work with a partner in Felix Liter for the first half of this book. I enjoyed that aspect of the story a lot. Not very often do you get a "buddy spy" story. I particularly loved Liter's teasing of Bond over Solitaire at the end of chapter 13.
Another part of the story I found very amusing was Bond's perception of American food and Solitaire's breakdown of life for oldsters in Florida's St. Petersburg.

Significant improvement on Casino Royale, but still not holding up well in the modern world with so many better books available.
