I was pretty disappointed by this book. I went it expecting a queer horror story featuring a sasquatch, but I felt like it didn't deliver on any of those points.

The build up is extremely slow with the action not happening until the last 20%. The parody reality show and it's contestants are interesting, but they are not strong enough to make up the entirety of the book's focus.

The queerness is fairly understated and not as prominent as I thought it would be. That is completely fine in general, but I went into this expecting it to be a lot more significant.

I just felt like the book went from endless content about the reality show, to senseless and overly graphic violence, to an abrupt ending. No questions were answered for me. I have no idea why anything happened in the story or what triggered the plot or even what the connections are between the remaining characters. For some books, the unexplained ending is done in a way to keep you thinking. For this book, given the absence of answers about anything else, it just left me feeling lost and disinterested.

The Batchelor meets slasher film with Big Foot and her lesbian following. Completely wild and I want more!

I really love this kind of horror. I had a lot of fun reading this; the humour was pretty funny, it had a few really scary moments and the ending was surprisingly sweet. It felt a little too short, I wanted to know way more about the strange main character (what the hell was she even doing on the dating show to begin with??). The second half is where it becomes a slasher but I also felt that went by far too quickly, as if it was trying to get the characters out of the way rather than giving time to breathe within kills. A lot of questions, especially about the members of the island group, went unanswered in a way that didn't satisfy me. Would recommend this though, if not just for a quick, weird and funny queer read about. Found family? And sasquatches.

February 2024:
Bumping up to a 4 star. After a really good book club discussion I think I appreciate this book a lot more. It's a good time and has so many scenes that are just impeccably written.

May 2023:

3.5
Hmm...I'm just not sure I got this. I thought the dialogue and the intrigue of the whole thing were wonderful and I was engaged enough throughout to give it a 3.5, but it felt like there should have been more to it. It ramped up to something really weird and interesting and different and then just kind of ended. I felt there was a lot more potential here and I would have loved another 100 pages or so.
