Chocky was a fun read! I enjoyed Wyndham’s other novels I’ve read so far a bit more, but this story once again was an great sci fi dystopian story nonetheless. The characters had depth, I especially loved the last chapters! I recommend this one.

A lot of firsts these days and I can't quite remember what made me want to read Chocky but I am glad that I did. I recall watching it as a child and being very frightened of it yet undeniably drawn to it. What I love about the story is that it is told through the format of Observer-Narrator, a rare narrative device which has the story told from the point of view of a character who is not the main protagonist. This works so well in this story since the main character is meant to be shrouded in mystery and questions and whether his friend, Chocky, is a figment of his imagination or not leaves the reader questioning right up until the end.
Although it is set in its time in relation to social attitudes and elements: money (shillings) and plenty of parents smoking, this does nothing at all to deter from the fact that this is a gripping story told incredibly well. I'm desperate to read other Wyndham texts now to see if they are as well written. Although the story is possibly aimed at KS3, I do think some children in Year 5 and 6 would find the story fascinating.

David and Mary are not overly worried about their son having an imaginary friend until their son begins to act strangely and asks questions that are much more advanced than his eleven years. Matthew’s Chocky , it seems, is not as imaginary as first thought and s/he becomes more and more pushy as time goes on. The story is developed so well. It slowly builds momentum while avoiding the sensational. I really enjoyed it. My favorite Wyndham so far.
