I knew going in that this book wasn't a thriller about the disappearance of Lizzie Lovett so much as it was a coming-of-age story about the protagonist, Hawthorn Creely. Therefore I wasn't misled or disappointed.

It reminded me of The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld. The 'aura' of the book also reminded me of The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith, though this book wasn't about sexual assault.

My qualms would be that Hawthorn sounded a little too juvenile at times--it wasn't what I expected a high school senior to act or think. I also didn't like how
she had sex with Enzo, who was 25 years old to her 17--regardless of 16 being the age of consent in the state of Ohio, it doesn't make it any less creepy. At the very least, though, the characters acknowledge that their encounter was problematic and the book doesn't normalise it.

In conclusion, there wasn't anything special or ground-breaking about it, but nevertheless a well-written coming-of-age story.
