This is one of Tolkiens three great tales, Beren and Lúthien and The Children of Húrin being the other two. This story was also (I believe) one of Tolkiens earliest stories written in Middle Earth (developed during his war years in 1917) and helped set the backdrop for what would later become The Hobbit & LOTR books that we all love so much!

Set in the First Age of Middle-Earth at a time when elves were at the height of their power and Morgoth is the dominant evil power filling his lands with orcs, Balrogs and other monstorous creatures on a much larger scale then anything little ol’ Sauron could muster! Having read Children of Húrin a while ago I was super excited to jump back into this period of time!

These reads are a very different experience to a full novel like LOTR. Christopher Tolkien has taken the work of his father and publishes in what could be compared to a historical study of the text. We get the earliest ever form of the full story followed by subsequent dives into how Tolkien developed it as his vision of Middle Earth grew and subsequently the most up to date re-write of the first half of the story, unfortunately J.R.R Tolkien never finished the re-write but I feel the two version together tell a brilliant fantasy story!

As always these ‘historical’ works of Tolkien are a bit more difficult to read but I personally love the poetic nature of them. I also feel that if I’d read Beren and Lúthien before this I would have had a better grasp of some of the Simarill references.

It's an extremely enjoyable read for anyone that wants a bit more Tolkien and I can’t wait to read even more!

Some of Tolkien’s finest writing, but the unfinished nature of this crucial part of the legend makes one wistful for what could have been.
