Dark, methodical crime thriller. Relies on cliches at times, but some moments are starkly original: few serial killer books I've read have been willing to get this nasty. I think this book became a little excessive at times, showing gratuitous violence and sort of senseless plot twists--the somewhat back heavy plotting makes this worse. But the writing is very technically sound and I like the characterization, especially of the main character. A competent police thriller that relies too much on shocks, even as it delivers some good ones.

It's sexy. I have no idea that necrophiliac can be sexy. Well, Criminal Minds often obscured it since it's not TV material. But hey, any obsession, when it's well described, it can be sexy as hell.
So Jack Caffery is pursuing a serial killer with specific obsession. As well as following his own obsession on his dead brother, Ewan. There are things that I like from this book. Okay, a lot of things. However, I don't like his relationship with both Veronica and Rebecca. I think the romance is kind of forced into the story. I mean, really. the author could write it off. But I haven't start on the second book to see if Jack's relationship with Rebecca is continued. So I can't say much here. But I'm sure if he changes female partner in every book, I'll brand him as the next Robert Langdon. LOL.
Pacing-wise, it does remind me to Tana French's and Ben Aaronovitch's, both which took place in British Isles. When I noticed this, my comment was, "So very British...".

3.5 stars. Decent police procedural that reminded me a bit of an episode of Criminal Minds I’d read more of the series
Deeply, cripplingly indebted to Thomas Harris and about fifty brand names conspicuously sported or consumed by the main characters.
