A bit darker middle grade novel with fairies (the Seelie and Unseelie kind) and magic. I usually don't care much about fairies but this was a very enthralling story.

I loved all the myth and legend and mystery tied up in this story. A great fairy adventure!

Tanya has always been able to see fairies, and has been tormented by them for this skill. As the fairies dole out increasingly destructive punishments for her diary entries about them, Tanya's mother becomes more and more frustrated with her troubled teen daughter. After the last event, Tanya is sent away to live with her emotionally distant grandmother, whose home happens to be overrun by fae. Tanya learns about fairy changelings, and the town's history of children disappearing. Tanya and her friend Fabian attempt to solve an old murder mystery, but are in for much more than they have bargained for.

The Thirteen Treasures is a bit of a standard fairy story in which fairies cause mischief and steal humans. If you want nasty fairy curses, ancient ancestors with strange histories, and derelict British estates, this book is for you. I found the story to be fun, if somewhat unremarkable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading the rest of the series. The writing is clear, the characters likable, all questions I had were answered (I hate stories that don't) and the ending left in a way where if you wanted you could read this as a standalone but I enjoyed this story line so much I want to continue and find out more.

This is the first in a trilogy about a girl who can see fairies. While visiting her grandmother for the summer, she gets caught up in an adventure as she and a friend try to figure out the mystery behind several missing children. The fairies are creepy and sometimes downright evil - those are my favorite parts.
