Mystery, friendship, conflict resolution, writing....so much going on (in a good way) with this graphic novel.
What a lovely, creative, and emotional book! There are two stories in here but they connect to show Cici’s character growth, which was an important lesson I think many kids could relate to. I loved the bookish elements, the characters, and the mixed-media journaling style.

this was one of the most beautiful graphic novels i’ve ever read - it was sweet and fun and adventurous and beautiful! also automatically a five star rating for anything that has a librarian character
Cici's Journal: The Adventures of a Writer-in-Training is a middle grade graphic novel by Joris Chamblain with illustrations by Aurélie Neyret. The reader follows a little girl named Cici (obviously) who has designs to be a detective and writer hence the writing of her journal (the book flip flops between narrative style and journal style) which is chock full of her observational notes. She lives alone with her mother who she has a strained relationship with (and they haven't even hit the troubled teen years!). Next door is an older woman who is an acclaimed mystery writer and the motivator of Cici's interests. The plot contains solvable (and believable) mysteries for a child detective/writer and are full of imaginative characters. [A/N: The book is divided into sections with discrete (somewhat overlapping) mysteries.] Chamberlain explores but ultimately doesn't solve the mystery of the relationship between the mother and daughter (series teaser?). There's no explanation given (or mention of) the father's absence or why Cici has such a reticence to sharing or even experiencing her feelings. The more I dwell on it the more complex I realize this story line actually is which I think is great in a middle grade novel.
Picking up this particular graphic novel was a roll of the dice for me but I ended up absolutely loving it. The book seems to be set up as the start of a series which I wouldn't be mad about at all. I haven't seen any buzz over this title online as yet but I highly encourage you to pick this one up especially if you've been wanting to dip your toe into the graphic novel pool. The illustrations are GORGEOUS. 10/10

This is a wonderful story about Cici, a girl who wants to be an author one day, and in order to hone her skills of observation she solves little mysteries that happen in her hometown. Her friend Mrs. Flores has told Cici to start writing a journal.
The pictures of both stories in this book are very detailed and colourful. The stories are easy to follow and they end happily for all people involved.

The artwork in this one is so beautiful - I love the vivid colours and the watercolour-esque style. The characters are quite good, and the mysteries were really great (both were sweet and sad, with a little hope).
However, the character of Cici actually irritated me quite a bit, so I had trouble relating to her throughout the books. I was more interested in her mystery characters than in here. So, a nice diversion, with gorgeous artwork, but not super engaging.

It was a really adorable and sweet story. The art in it were beautiful.
This was fine. The art was cute and the premise was interesting, but the tone was a little strange. It definitely sounded like it was being written by an adult rather than a ten year old (main character’s age). The entire book was aimed at teaching empathy, and I don’t know how successful it would be with a kid, but it didn’t do much for me.
