WOW this book was batshit crazy and I expected nothing less from queen Anne. It is so different from witching hour and so good (I might’ve like this one more) the catholic and European folklore elements were so rich. it had a slow start but once things got going and the stakes were high, I was enthralled. absolutely horrific. brava

So, let me explain.

For starters, the content in the book is. Horrific. Biggest things to worry about are rape, incest, pedophilia, gore, racism? I feel like the racism is standard for an Anne Rice novel, so if you've made it this far down into her works, this is essentially her bread and butter.

Anyways, obviously, I don't like the fact that there are depictions of pedophilia right out the gate in chapter two, and reading how Anne Rice essentially makes it to where the thirteen-year-old is the one to watch out for
who hunts down the men in her family for her sexual endeavors is crazy. I don't think explicitly describing how she has sex with her uncle was fun, much less that the uncle is treated like "oh, this is her fault, she's so seductive" like she's thirteen?? And you're almost fifty?? Get it together.
I refuse to believe this served some sort of narrative goal,
and it made me hate Michael when I had actually really like him from the previous book
. And then the way other children and minors are described as lustful, like "the baby had a lustful, seductive laugh" do you hear yourself right now? You sound disgusting. Many characters who did not deserve happiness in this novel, I hated many characters.

While we're on it, I want to talk about how Rowan has moved up in the rankings as my favorite character.
Being able to grab your mutant daughter by her hair and tell your estranged, pedophilic husband to kill her after she saves your life by feeding you her breast milk is crazy, but
she had the strength to do what needed to be done, and I commend her for it. Love Rowan down, all her crimes forgiven.

Back to the main part, the book itself. Weird, horrible content. Is some of it shock value? Most likely. But the story, the lore, the mystery, god, Anne Rice, you freak, you know how to trap me in a good story. This book was my most consuming thought for all of two weeks? Maybe? I have a job, you guys, and I just got out of a reading slump, so me absolutely devouring this book so quickly is a mark of excellent writing in my opinion. I was enamored with the descriptions, drawn in by the mythology, absolutely lost in the sauce and wonder of the uncertainty if they would catch the bad guy, would they actually kill Lasher, will the Mayfair witches know peace? I had a stone in my gut in the final fifteen or so chapters, literally fighting for any minute to read the book. I wish with all my heart I didn't enjoy a book as nonsensical as this book can be, as disgusting and horrifying as it can be, but, god, it was so good. If you can make it through the first book and the second chapter of this one, it's worth it. I hope no one ever reads this, but if you can, and you're intrigued, read it!!! Join me!!! Relish in the horror!!!
