REVIEW FOR FUTURE ME WHEN I FORGET THAT I EVEN READ THIS BOOK:
This started off awfully. The first 40% was 95% dialogue that was both hard to follow and pointless. The whole time at the cabin was super dreary and that amount of time just wasn’t needed to set up the fact that the group were old friends and Joe was an asshole. Once we got to her mum’s things ramped up in true McFarlane style and you really enjoyed it. Not normally one for friends to lovers but Matt was super sweet and #actsofservice so you’ll allow it. A great depiction of the fortitude of female friendships in the face of a gaslighting SO, and the length it can take to unpack childhood trauma. Also, his TV show sounded super shit and misogynistic

Yep yep yep!!
This is definitely my favorite Mhairi read so far (out of 2). This is an exceptionally funny book. I chuckled (chortled?) while reading this. I loved her usage of peculiar words — it was quirky in a way but I loved it!
I probably would’ve rated this a 5 stars except I didn’t get that feeling reading this book, considering I never deeply related to the characters. I liked them enough to be interested in their story but I didn’t connect to them. ALSO it was definitely a slow start (similar to The Cover Story by her for me but at least I didn’t spend 18 days reading this). I’ll definitely pick up another Mhairi read because of her great humor !

I really liked Matt’s character. I also really enjoyed the main character sleuthing, I thought it kept the story interesting.
These books are excellent easy reading, usually set in a UK city (Manchester this time!) with cultural references and places to match. I like these little unnecessary details.
Once I start one of these books and I settle in, I'm normally then addicted and finish within hours, so they're definitely compelling. Some interesting themes explored here including gaslighting and general relationship toxicity but never with any particular sense of real threat. Many of the characters were pretty two dimensional. But like I said above - it's easy reading, the equivalent of streaming a guilty pleasure (currently, the Bold Type for me).

Loved the book and Roisin was uncannily relatable! Definitely reading more of Mhari Mcfarlene
Moderate: Cursing, Emotional abuse, Infidelity, Panic attacks/disorders, Toxic relationship, Medical content, Grief, Death of parent, Gaslighting

Not my favourite but this author is still engaging and I’ll continue through her stories. The love story at the end happens quite suddenly and I wanted a slow burn. Then when she starts trying to understand the infidelity and meets with Beatrice I was cringing, let it go. On the other hand, I don’t know what it’s like to be in a ten year relationship with suspected cheating, so, fair. But for her to blame Matt for not telling her what he knew, when his backstory has a central plot point that telling on his Uncle made him lose his family? And then for that not to be examined as a reason he was reticent to confront her? I was confused. I ended up speed reading the last 1/8th the book because I was disappointed in the plotting. I also felt Matt as love interest really deserved better from everyone, especially the FMC.
I am still reading all the author’s catalogue because I loved About Last Night, which was my first one.
