This book sounded interesting so I entered the Goodreads Giveaway, but it turned out to be much better than I had anticipated. Thomas Halliday writes very well and even manages to make sense to a non-scientist! Some things needed a re-read to fully grasp the concept, but for the most part Halliday describes things in a way that isn't too difficult to comprehend. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am very happy to have won a copy.

A fascinating and thought provoking book on the nature of changing environments. A deep look into the worlds that existed over billions of years, in reverse chronological order, contextualizes the author's reflections on our current period of climate change and loss of species. He discusses the concept of the Ship of Theseus and how that relates to speciation.

Otherlands is the book form of the nature documentary, except youβre not reading about lions on the Serengeti, itβs pterosaurs in the cretaceous and trilobites in the ordovician. Each chapter brilliantly evokes a period and environment in history, working back through time, explaining some of the biological, ecological and geological factors that impact the earths ecosystems and there development.
This is a great book that delivers on its aims, although I found myself craving illustrations. (I did it on audio but the physical book is apparently low in visual aids). And it is definitely a book to dip in a chapter at a time if you really want to take it in. I loved learning a bit more about paleo-biology, I was less keen on the flashbacks to standing hungover in the rain in Welsh quarries looking at black smoker deposits with a load of lads who dress exclusively like their overprotective mumβs sending them off hiking - but thatβs a very niche personal down side π
It finishes with a succinct summary of how we are witnessing the 6th mass extinction, that earth and life will continue long after humans cease to be a dominant ecosystem shaper, and a reminder that itβs not change thatβs dangerous but pace.
