The genre exploring child stars/acting and transition into adulthood seems to be on the rise and honestly I'm here for it. This one was a bit over the top, but I still liked it. I think if I hadn't recently read Elissa Sloan's Hayley Aldridge is Still Here , I would have liked it even more, but that book was so good that it was hard to compete. I think my issue with this book is that things were a bit too convoluted at times (what happened with Summer's journal, etc.), while at other times too simplistic (things just wrapped up and were solved suddenly). The premise was great and I loved that it felt fairly unique but also familiar (I'm sure I can name some shows that this was loosely based on), but I think the execution could have been a bit stronger.

The Daydreams is an insightful examination of how networks, fans and the media treated young female stars in the early 2000s. Hankin calls on memories of Britney, Lindsay Lohan, and Miley Cyrus, while still creating original scandals and disasters for her three protagonists to deal with. Paired with memoirs like Jeanette McCurdy’s, The Daydreams examines all the double standards young starlets are held to, and the audience’s complicity in destroying their lives for our own entertainment.

The Daydreams follows four stars from a famous show in the early aughts through two timelines: one as they navigate their quick rise to fame in unforgiving Hollywood, and one 13 years later as they reconcile where their lives have taken them following an unexpected halt to their momentum as a group. This was a super fun read and felt like being immersed in the time of Cosmo and Tiger Beat and gossip blogs and cropped tank tops and denim mini skirts all over again!

This book suffers from expectation versus reality. It's a look into character relationships and how those change over time, and less about the Hollywood drama. I expected something a little more campy versus the serious tone the book took. Overall, it felt like it had too slow of a pace for the cadence of the story and plot. The character development is amazing and there's some great plot twists, though. The writing style incorporates multimedia (chat rooms, articles, etc.) which is really fun.

A sumptuous, nostalgic feast that balanced sunshine & satire in such a satisfying way.
