Woof. This book gave me a lot of stress and anxiety. I am getting my masters in counseling and it seems that counselors might struggle the most with this book due to Dr. Rosen’s unorthodox practices and the complete lack of ethical guidelines and privacy. This group and book goes against the cardinal rule of therapy (especially group therapy) which is confidentiality. There are no secrets in this book and the author often om goes beyond just oversharing her own life and oversharing details from her own life. Also to echo other reviews, the author is not likable. Her tone often comes across immature and very egocentric. It didn’t help my view of her that I read about her background before I began the book. She is the infamous mommy blogger who refused to stop blogging about her daughter even when she begged her to stop. I wonder if she is just an exploitive person or if her small group with no boundaries really imprinted on her. It is neat to see the transference that happens as she learns to build relationships through group, but there is no privacy and no boundaries and it seems she also took that from therapy. To non-therapists readers, I want to emphasize that this therapy is very ... unique. In addition to Dr. Rosen’s quirky and often inappropriate prescriptions, the author began this group 20 years ago. I would hate for this book to scare anyone away from group therapy because it really can be so powerful. However with all of my issues with the book, I will say the ending was very sweet. It just felt like it took a very long time to get there.

very emotionally resonant characters but the series of romantic relationships and her failure to end them soon enough got kinda boring. also her politics are lowkey wack

As a social worker myself, I really question the ethics of this therapist. This book had quite a bit of humor, which I appreciated. There were times I just wanted to reach for Christie through the book, shake her, and tell her to grow up. The more I read though, the more I became invested in her love life and just wanting her to be happy. It started slow, but picked up as it went on.

While this book is very much the unique journey of the author, a journey I couldn't relate to much, I liked that it made me think about shame, anger, the power of secrets, and the ability to talk things through with others.
