I am glad to know more about recent Ukrainian history now, but this book felt very middle-of-the-road in every aspect.

I Will Die in a Foreign Land is a very disjointed work, primarily taking during and in the aftermath of Maidan, while also eluding to the Soviet period and the Prague Spring. It’s written in these short chapters which vary from narrative to prose, etc — Pickhart is also a big fan of fullstops and short sentences. Overall, for me, this produced a very good reading experience. The book is certainly pro-Ukrainian which is reflected very much in every decision of possible portrayal of events which I’d argue is the most controversial thing about this book. The book has a lot of characters and it is sometimes hard to keep track. It was a decent book and reminded me a bit of my favourite author, Milan Kundera.

This book reads like a teenager wrote it. Which I could forgive if it was written by a teenager, and/or translated from Ukrainian by someone whose native language isn’t English. But it was written by an adult “creative writing” graduate from Arizona. This is a topic worth learning about but I only lasted 37 pages before I decided I could definitely find something more engaging to read.
