I don't deny that this book is very well written: the imagery, the emotion, the cycle through the hero's journey. However, the sharp racist turn that this book takes in the last third lost me. I know the book is an old classic and it reflects the beliefs of the time, but since it caught me completely by surprise, it just left a bad taste I my mouth. I want to like this book, but all I can remember right now are the slurs.

Incredibly well written and moving, and honestly, kind of depressing, but it's all so well done you just roll with it.

This book is beautifully and brutally written. I loved the first story - the call of the wild - and it alone would be over 4 stars, but the following ones were a bit disappointing.(maybe just because I liked the first one so much)

A very difficult read,  so much of the book was describing severe animal abuse and cruelty. The very few pages where Buck gets peace do not balance out the difficulty of the book. The book ending wasn't very satisfying  sure, he is answering the "call of the wild," but it just fell flat

A very short but beautiful book. I watched the Disney film with Harrison Ford and that stayed with me for ages, so I knew I had to read the book. It was cool reading and seeing the film in my mind as I read, though there were changes made to the plot for the film which makes sense having now read the book. I think I resonate with Buck a little; I think we all do.

It was super fun reading about animals and from an animal's perspective, not many books do that!

Ultimately a 4.25/5. Wish it was longer but tbh it didn't need to be longer, I just like reading about Buck!
