Pretty much all of my reviews sound the same regarding a Mary Calmes book because in essence, all of Mary’s books are the same.

This starts with Ceaton, ex-military, extremely loyal, handsome beyond belief but never forming any attachments because he just hasn’t found “the one”. He’s a mobster’s top man for solving problems, but he still has moral standards.

This ends with Ceaton meeting the love of his life, ray of sunshine Brinley, and as is par for the course, in a blink of an eye he falls hard and fast. It doesn’t matter to Brinley that Ceaton is a killer, because he’s a killer with a heart of gold.

Just know this is smack dab in the middle of Calmes’s immense Chicago universe and ties directly to [b:Mine|13455726|Mine|Mary Calmes|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328577294l/13455726._SX50_.jpg|18984209] and paves the road to [b:Late in the Day|36409352|Late in the Day (The Vault, #2)|Mary Calmes|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1507957585l/36409352._SY75_.jpg|57336454].

Overall, ridiculously over the top but still fun and romantic in that classic Calmes insta-claiming proprietary lusty love that checks off those boxes when you want some reliable entertainment!

This book turned seriously creepy when the two main protagonists met. Only a psychopath would react as the "normal" person met his love interest for the second time. No crush in the world would lead anybody to not react like he did. And no person working in science would be that naive and actually stupid.
My first big disappointment reading Mary Calmes.

Oh, that was a wild ride. So the first half of this book was violence and seriousness and a sort of found family and I adored it. Then the switch flipped to ludicrous and I *also* adored that. Brin is.. a lot. Like, the whole thing was just so silly. And then, very shortly after, serious and silly jumped in a blender to finish off the book and...it was just the best thing ever? Utter enjoyment. Wow.

I loved it of course. I loved how she made me love Ceaton and his friends. You have to read it to find out who his love interest is. A lot of things happen that I don't want to spoil. Just to let you know when they got together I loved him and they were perfect for each other. I really hope this is a series...

Not a fan of instant coffee love. Instant attraction okay, but instant love is uh-huh

Mary calmes is a most fabulous writer which is why I read the whole book in one sitting. My favorite part was the relationships ceaton had with his friends, was pretty uninterested in the romantic rushed as hell storyline which is very unlike me, and always what I'm looking for in books. I really feel as though I know Ceaton well (aside from his past) and I enjoyed reading his story.

My history reading [a:Mary Calmes|3152411|Mary Calmes|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1473696272p2/3152411.jpg] has not been the best. I know I have several DNFs ... two or less star ratings written by her. I think the reason is her stories tend to be too outlandish and unbelievable for my tastes - except for this book - in this book, outlandish works - and works really well. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read ... fun and fantastic ... and yes, definitely, outlandish but in a very good way ...

I suspect this book is the start of a new series? If so, I'm definitely looking forward to the next book ...

Re read enjoyed the book just as much as when I first read it.

I really enjoyed this book. I love how the characters are different than a typical romance. Ceaton is not what society would call a good person but yet he still deserves to find his happiness. As always Mary Calmes delivers a great read.

I’m sort of a sucker for bad boy assassins.
