Wow, this book was amazing.

I think it was a great idea for John Connolly to go back and write a prequel. I was extremely interested when I heard that he was exploring Charlie Parker before the first book in the series. This book was loaded with excitement, mystery, and intrigue. Connolly's Shakespearean prose always knocks me off of my feet. He can weave a sentence together like no one else. The Charlie Parker books are always fantastic, and this one was no exception.

I love Charlie Parker books. I love Connolly's voice and language, turns of the phrases and the humour. I enjoyed this part of his earlier life. This book is almost entirely devoid of supernatural - which was a boon.

My 2nd Charlie Parker book (after first being introduced to him in short story format). I found it lacked what initially had me drawn to this world, that sense of the paranormal, or the hint of supernatural elements at play. Though as a mystery it was very well played out. I loved the small town America setting, and the writing is excellent.

There were a lot of characters introduced in this small town, and unfortunately sometimes it was hard to constantly place who was who, or rather who was in who's pocket. That aside, the character descriptions are vivid with little nuances that really added depth to them as individuals.

While the story started strong, it kind of petered out a bit toward the middle. I found my attention drifting, but ultimately picked up again toward the end as everything unfolded.

Dark and disturbing as it could be, there was also some some solid wit thrown in, cementing my enjoyment of the series in place. I definitely want to read more of Parker, and perhaps even in order this time.
