I originally saw We Are Experiencing a Slight Delay in the travel section of my local bookstore. The subtitles of the book drew me to the book and decided to pick it up blindly without reading the synopsis.
Knowing nothing about the author and thinking I was reading this book to get "trips, tales and travel", I felt bamboozled. I knew nothing about the author, enjoyed his commentary, and understood that he and his husband met on a random trip to Myoknsis, and have been married for over 20 years.
Maybe I would have gotten more if I knew who the author was (to some capacity), and this is no shade to the author because while I did get a few chuckles here and there, it wasn't anything special to me because there was no attachment to begin with.
I also wanted to DNF the book, but because it was short and the pace was pretty quick, I decided to continue on with reading. Memo to self, don't blindly pick up a book by its cover.

If I were reborn as a gay man, I would be Gary Janetti. He writes about his every day experiences and his observations of people with such wit, humor, and relatability. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken pictures of quotes from his book to send to my friends. You know those thoughts we all have, but are hesitant to share out loud? Gary Janetti has no qualms about saying them and he does not hold back. I think inevitably he gets compared to David Sedaris because they write the same sorts of things, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Gary Janetti’s writing does so much more for me.

I do like snarky humor, but a rich guy and his husband stalking out of a restaurant because they hated it for reasons they can't define is just not relatable. There's a lot of complaining that comes across as whiny instead of funny. A number of the travel experiences he has are just so privileged, I'm kind of flabbergasted that he has the gall to complain about them. Some of the essays needed serious revision. I could see the tone he was going for, but it didn't hit. There were parts I laughed about, but the things I recall most are things that annoyed me. The cruise ship fiasco where he was going to celebrate his birthday twice (alone--why does that sound like a great plan), but on second thought bailed was one that kind of stunned me. How many wasted thousands of dollars does that experience represent?
I guess it just boils down to the fact that I'm not in his ideal audience demographic. I'm rural-living, lower middle class with a different value set in almost every area. I will probably never not fly economy, and getting to fly at all is a big deal.
Anyway, I'm glad some people enjoyed this, because I just didn't.

Prior to picking this up off the new-bookshelf at my local library, I had not heard of Gary Janetti. Sorry…not one of the zillions that have watched Family Guy. But, oh goodness, am I so glad that this title leapt off the shelf and screamed “Read me!”
While I had initially borrowed a print version of the book, I ended up listening to the audio recording while on a road trip with the husband. I am so glad I opted for that format! The author himself narrates the essays he painstakingly slaved over writing. I love when I feel like the narrator-author is just sitting across from me, drinking a cup of coffee, and sharing tale after tale. Gary Janetti did that to perfection: his narration pulled us deeper into each travel reminiscence.
We laughed out loud so hard that, several times, we had to hit the repeat button because we did not want to miss a single word. This was 100% pure fun and we’ll be looking to read more of his work.

There are plenty of laughs in this book, fun tips to consider for traveling, and enjoyment in just reading the stories.
It was fun--better than Sedaris as Janetti, although willing to snark with the rest of us, spends more time expounding on the beauty and joy of his experiences. A pleasant way to while away an afternoon.
