If you haven't read the first book yet, steer clear of the second one—the cover itself contains a major spoiler.
When you do decide to pick it up, opt for the hardcover edition instead of the paperback. The paperback (ISBN-13 978-0062946157) is incredibly stiff, and despite handling it carefully, I still ended up with three noticeable cracks along the spine.

This book got me back into reading again, though it has raised my standards quite a lot.

It was SUCH a fun read, so many twists throughout the story, took me 2 sessions to read it cause I was instantly hooked. Loved the lore, it was interesting as fuck. The foreshadowing...Ah
The characters were also fun to read about, they had engaging stories and were all incredibly likeable to me (except Katherine, didn't really enjoy her), even the side characters !!! (That trio...)

I have an attachment to this book now and have to take it everywhere I go to read bc MWAH it's gorgeous.

(Man, I felt so bad for Marcus tho, did CS Pacat even realise how sad they made his story? It kinda hit me hard lol...)

Overall, it’s an okay read.
The first 60% are incredibly repetitive, it almost makes me think the the author thinks the readers have the memory of a goldfish. No, I don’t need to be reminded of the stakes of the plot every 2 pages. This becomes more aggravating when certain reveals happens and we realize why they structured the book that way.

Besides that, I think the book would really flourish if it wasn’t a YA. The whole light and dark side would be more complex and interesting with the author made it an adult fantasy.
