Why does Karin Slaughter keep doing this to me?! Drawing me in to absorb her characters’ pain and crave vengeance for their suffering. One chapter of this book had me in tears I was so engrossed. This book is only the third book of hers that I have read but all three of them have been great. She just sucked me in and made me her fan!
tw: home invasion, murder, rape, child abuse, infidelity, death of a parent, school shooting, suicide. if you are at all sensitive to these topics, please enter this with extreme hesitation. the details are very vivid

first thing is this book did not need to be this long, 18 hours for a thriller audiobook is my 13th reason. the writing style was SUPER verbose at times, almost had a stream of consciousness feel to it.
i enjoyed the beginning and middle parts of the story however, when the plot twists started rolling down i was quickly over it. ESPECIALLY the ending plot twist, i really wanted to throw my phone across the room when i heard that one!!
one small thing that was probably a ME issue was i could really not tell which sister we were focusing on. (possibly because the audiobook narrator used the same voice for both sisters)
i don’t really know if i will read any of the authors other works.. maybe if i can get them through the library again

Great story, I loved the detail taken with the girls. Warning there are graphic moments that are tough to take...

Wow.
This book takes the reader from the tragic night Charlie and Samantha's mother is murdered to 28 years later, and walks us through all the way that night shaped and misshaped their lives. The current town tragedy brings to light many secrets and twists its way into The Quinn sister's past and current selves.
This book is not for the faint of heart. Massive TW for r*pe.

“You have to put that baton firmly in her hand every time, no matter where she is. You find her. Don’t expect her to find you.”
This book is intense and it hardly lets up, from murder, to torture, to school shootings, to court room drama, to broken marriages, affairs, tragic death, disabilities, and TBIs. I don't think that list is near complete, just off the top of my head. It packs a punch and really takes you there. It is dark. I could not put it down.
I appreciated the complexity of the crime that is the central focus of the story, and while I guessed the "who done it" I didn't predict the second twist Slaughter likes to throw at her characters in their personal lives. And yet somehow it all becomes intertwined.
Their adult selves might very well be strangers, but there were certain things that age, no matter how cunning, could not wear away.
But what made this book for me were the characters. Slaughter lets her characters drive her thrillers and I think that is what makes them great for me. The complexity and depth of Charlie and Samantha. How they were defined by their trauma, their mother, their father, and each other. It felt so real. Slaughter writes it all so vividly they came alive to me. The way she writes imperfect character that you are rooting for is unmatched. I think Charlie was my favorite, yet she did so many things that made me stress. And Rusty! The way he was seen by Sam, by Charlie, the town and his friends - what the reader comes to understand about him. It is all unpacked perfectly. This is master class in plotting.
Don’t look back. You have to trust me to be there.
There are a lot of heavy topics in this book and there is graphic violence and one very graphic rape scene. I am sure people have argued until they're blue in the face about how it was unnecessary to be so graphic. It was a lot but I don't think it was handled poorly. Slaughter does not shy from the tough topics and I appreciate that so much. I think not minimizing the horror of this crime is one of those tough topics she is asking the reader to face.
“What a rapist takes from a woman is her future. The person she is going to become, who she is supposed to be, is gone. In many ways, it’s worse than murder, because he has killed that potential person, eradicated that potential life, yet she still lives and breathes, and has to figure out another way to thrive. [...] Or not, in some cases.”
