An interesting and thought-provoking read, set in a near future where men are electronically tagged from age 10 and legally required to stay at home during the night, and women seemingly hold all the power.
That is, until a woman is found to have been brutally murdered sometime during the night.
Attacks on women have fallen dramatically, but there is still political pressure to arrest a woman for the crime as proof that the curfew is working.
The subsequent investigation leads us to follow dual timelines as we learn how the events unfolded, discover more about how society now functions, and meet people with various stances on the new laws.

England, in nicht allzu ferner Zukunft: Die Sicherheit von Frauen steht im Mittelpunkt. Die Freiheit der Männer wird durch Ausgangssperre und Fußfessel empfindlich eingeschränkt. Das Konzept funktioniert gut. Bis eine Frau ermordet im Park aufgefunden wird. Die Verdächtige kann nur eine Frau sein. Denn wie sollte ein Mann alle Gesetze umgehen können?
"After Dark" war mein erster Thriller von Jayne Cowie und hatte mich aufgrund des Klappentextes und des Gedankenspiels "Was ist, wenn Männer sich nicht mehr frei bewegen können?" angezogen. Nach der Lektüre bin ich enttäuschter, als ich dachte.
Die Autorin baut ihren Roman auf der einfach anmutenden Idee "Frauen schützen, in dem Männer eingeschränkt werden und Frauen so viel Unterstützung wie nötig bekommen" auf und viele Aspekte haben durchaus ihren Reiz. Frauen werden staatlich unterstützt, genießen umfangreichen Schutz und Männer müssen sich bereits ab jungen Jahren diversen strengen Gesetzen unterordnen. Die Machtverhältnisse kehrt Cowie komplett um. Das fand ich spannend.
Mit ihren weiblichen Figuren reißt sie allerdings diese reizvolle Idee wieder ein. Kapitelweise erzählen Sarah, Cass und Helen ihre Geschichte. Sarah lebt von ihrem Mann getrennt und erzieht ihre fast 18-jährige Tochter Cass alleine. Von Männern will sie nichts mehr wissen. Cass hingegen kann die strengen Gesetze nicht nachvollziehen und empfindet sie als Beschneidung ihrer eigenen Entfaltung. Helen hingegen wünscht sich sehnlichst ein Kind und will so schnell wie möglich mit ihrem Partner, einer wandelnden Red Flag, zusammen ziehen.
Der Aufbau der Figuren wirkt, als ob nach möglichst stereotypen Vorurteilen, die Männer über Frauen haben, gesucht wurde. Die "Männerhasserin", die naive Jugendliche, die mit warmen Worten sofort alle Sorgen fahren lässt und die Frau, die Muttersein als höchstes Ziel ansieht. Das hat mir den Lesespaß teils verleidet.
Der Thriller hätte ein spannender Appell an die Wichtigkeit des Feminismus sein können. So bleibt er zwar spannend, aber flach.

Interesting premise but let down by lack character depth and contrived plot
It's taken me a while to read and review this one, but I decided to return to this book after finishing Jayne Cowie's later book - I Did It For You. Both books are set in a near dystopian future and have thought provoking concepts. This one is based on a male curfew at night to protect women.
The story revolves the discovery of a woman's body who has been murdered and how this could have occurred with the strict curfew restrictions in place. It rolls out in an interesting fashion and is a quick read, but unfortunately I found it difficult to connect with the characters.
Perhaps I should have left more time between Jayne's two books but the one I liked more was her second book. That said, the author has some intriguing concepts and I'd happily read another to see which direction she takes next time.

A world in which men are under curfew at night, does it make women safer? who knows
This setting was definitely something different, it was intriguing especially because it seems like a quick fix solution to a far deeper problem and I was hooked by reading about the conflicting nature of this reality. In the end, I felt the book was a bit disappointing because the only character who opposed this setting changed her mind when 2 men did something wrong…
The end of who the killer was, just was too quick; it only took 1 1/2 pages to find out who and how whilst we have 300 pages exploring a mother/daughter/father relationship that sensed like a 2nd plot next to the actual plot…
It’s a little bit like the purge, does it really fix the problem or does it simply divert from it by creating different problems?
Anyways, a good read but the execution could have been done better.
