I love the artwork.

2015 Great Graphic Novels Top Ten

I loved this book! I was drawn to it simply because of that gorgeous cover, but the story itself was surprisingly poignant and sweet. The main character was such a complex, kickass girl and the fact that a "book about gaming" tackled such important topics and bullying and health-care needs was a refreshing change of pace in a world where society's perception of gaming is still so full of misunderstanding and judgement.

I wish it was longer! I wish I could play Coursegold Online! Highly recommended to anyone who loves games or wants to be incredibly impressed with the depth of a graphic novel.

OMG so good. All girl gamers should read this. And everyone else.

Cute!

Has some important messaging about organizing and economics and globalization, but it also has some bad messaging on maintaining privacy online. Regardless, I really enjoyed it, and it was a super unique way to tell it's story. The world, just the background art in each page both in game and in real life, is so deeply beautiful and inventive. Woulld 100% read again.

Baby's first classism.
White savior complex runs amock, nowhere near as entrancing as when I originally read this one in ninth grade and went :O at the Real Social Issues Being Displayed. Look, guys, how many times do you hear actual union terminology being thrown around in children's media? Teen's media? Not enough. And I think that even though this isn't a terribly complex story and there is a great comment below about all the avatars looking the same for the "gold farmers" being mildly racist (why does Anda's profile not look like that when she's originally making her avatar, but it does the second time? What's up with your visual shorthand?).... it is at least a good introduction to these concepts. Like, I think fundamentally, I can't see people coming out of this one with the absolute WRONG message. Which makes it alright in my book. As for the actual design, wish they'd gone harder on the MMO designs, and the general world around them, but besides that, it is very charming.

I think the plot moved a little to quickly for me. Ignoring that I read this in one day, I still didn't feel like we really sat in the moments enough to let things come together smoothly. Still, the story was very nice. It'll teach readers that things aren't so black and white. And the art is gorgeous

Jen Wang’s art is amazing. I love it so much.

I can’t believe this was published over ten years ago! I’ve been meaning to read it for a while, but I didn’t realize it had been that long. I wanted to like it more than I did, but it’s all so far-fetched. The intent is sweet, but I don’t think this plot worked, especially for a middle grade book.
