I've been seeing April Ajoy videos for a few years now do I was excited to read her book. I enjoyed it and learned a thing or two (did you know 'one nation under God wasn't added to the pledge until the late 1950's?)
There are two things you should know before you read the book though:
1. Ajoy has this cringey Millenial humor that, quite frankly works better in her videos than in the book (sorry). I didn't mind it too much, but I definitely found myself rolling my eyes for than laughing out loud.
2. In my opinion, she is far too nice. I do understand that Ajoy was a part of the Christian Nationalist/evangelical group and probably still has loved ones living in that mind set. In particular, I think she was soft on the Christian Nationalist and White Supremacy connection. She did note that they were deeply ingrained, but said that Christian Nationalist doesn't equal white supremacist. Sure, but I would say most of them ARE racist. They may not be shouting it from the streets or proud of it, they may even be in denial of it (common things I hear my father say, I don't see color and I love everyone). But if you hear the jokes they make at the expensive of minorities, they definitely have some racist beliefs.

This is an important book and the author feels like the right person to have written it. I learned a lot.
