This book is going to be so important in the coming times. It was beautiful and reflective and heartbreaking and I am so happy I read it. I feel better for having read it. It reinforced some of the feelings I felt after leaving my own group and laid bare some other things I hadn’t considered. I HIGHLY recommend it!

Star-Spangled Jesus is a must-read. It's informative, educational, well-written, and engaging. It shines light on Christian nationalism and makes sense of the current state of the US. If you're a Christian or live in the US, you really should read this book.

Fantastic book that is part memoir and part analysis of Christian Nationalism.

Unfortunately, it already feels a bit dated with the reelection of Trump. I mean, there’s so much more horrible stuff she could have written about!

This week I listened to a local church sermon from prior to the election where the pastor was pontificating on how the church is moral and must vote family values…which apparently meant voting for the convicted felon and adjudicated rapist? Who chose a dude who probably trafficked children as attorney general?

Its disgusting. But it continues to prove April’s point. Christian Nationalism is evil. I imagine in 20 or 30 years white evangelicals will act like it has always been seen that way while they conveniently forget most of them supported it.

I’m glad I’ve never supported it. Hopefully April can help convince more how evil it is.

Excellent book!! What a beautiful and challenging memoir from April. You can tell her passion for this topic and her love for Jesus and people in this book.

Word of warning though, if you are not familiar with how outspoken, outrageous, cringey, and full of rage people online can be, you may go through this book thinking “what is she talking about? No one actually says stuff like that. She’s being dramatic.” Unfortunately, many of the “angry evangelical rebuttals” she jokes about are for real things people have said and done. I’ve seen quite a bit of it in my old communities too. The lack of decorum and kindness (or even the lack of “mind your own business”) from people is very real in online spaces.
I do highly recommend the audiobook version of this book as you can hear April’s tone, which I found softened some of the sarcasm and allowed you to better understand her heart on topics.
Loved this book and will be recommending it to friends :)
