It's still unclear to me what the optimal order is to read this series. I enjoyed this one, but I was alternatively frustrated and relieved that I've already met some of the characters and this book filled in some of the holes. Nice pacing, highly entertaining.
These books were recommended to me as a Horatio Hornblower fan, but I found myself very underwhelmed. I found the characterization of all the characters to be quite shallow, and that does include Sharpe. Many of the characters actions were unbelievable like the falling in love or running hither or yon at the drop of a hat. I also found the main character to be quite unlikable, which never gives a book much chance of being liked by me. For me, the battle scenes dragged on and were uninteresting, as well as being unnecessarily graphic at times. There is also a lot of profanity, especially of the Lord's name being taken in vain. I have no interest in reading any of the other books in this series.
Revisiting the Sharpe novels which I first read 15-20yrs ago. They’re still as enjoyable and the ‘bastard’ count is high.
