I liked the historical perspective on the Peninsular War as it is a time that I have little to no knowledge of however the writing itself was fairly lackluster. The characters did have some actual development but the seeming need of the author to always include a female character in a war setting makes other interactions less likely.

Reread March 2010: decent action-adventure, suitable for light beach/plane reading.
This was so GOOD!
Sharpe, now a Quartermaster of the Rifles, finds himself the most senior officer and must now lead his group to safety through Spain as the French hunt both the English and the Spanish. On the way, he joins forces with Major Vivar who is on his way to Santiago de Compostela in one last desperate attempt to fight off the French.
The military fiction was so well done I found myself anxious during the battle scenes. I think the greenjackets are my favourite group Sharpe has been in so far (I can’t wait to see more of Sharpe and Harper being besties). I've missed this series and will definitely make it a priority now. As usual Rupert Farley’s narration remains superior.

I'm two books ahead so my memory is a little hazy. Spoilers ahead:
Sharpe's company is left behind as the British retreat. All the officers die except for Sharpe and he becomes the ranking officer. Later on, after fighting private Harper and at the persuasion of a Spanish officer, Harper becomes the sergeant who is Sharpe's faithful companion for the rest of the series.
Anyway Sharpe is trying to get back to the British but he is persuaded by the charming and personable Spanish major Blas Vivar to go with him. Vivar lies to Sharpe because he needs the protection of his riflemen so he can raise a gonfalon (banner) in the captured Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. This act would serve to raise the spirits of the Spanish people.
Element of conflict: French colonel Pierre D'Eclin and Vivar's brother who sides with the French.
Sharpe's romantic target in this book: Louisa Parker, the niece of an evangelizing Methodist English couple. She came to see the world but feels constrained by the strictness of her aunt. After a romp in the hay, she decides to stay behind and marries Major Vivar.
As usual, very good battle scenes, small character vignettes and great description of the war in Spain.
