I feel terribly unsophisticated in my lack of affection for this book. It should be everything I love: set during the last days of the Soviet Union, following the life of a teenage boy as he tries to deal with his family, his peers, and figure out a befuddling world. But ... it did nothing for me. I didn't like any of the characters, the hints of rebellion/foreignness that leaked into the story were never followed up upon (something which could be entirely realistic, but still wasn't compelling) and, frankly, there's only so much macho talking of "pissing yourself" I can take from 15-year-old boys.
