While the premise was intriguing, this was one of the most boring books I’ve ever read. Slower than slow, the plot just meanders about with little to show for it. Even the few parts where there is some action were subdued and it just felt like the author was phoning it in. I didn’t care for any of the characters & should have DNFd it. Thrillers are supposed to be thrilling or have some sort of payoff if they are slow; this was a nepotistic snooze-fest.

Yes, another member of the Kellerman family. I didn't like this book. The first half was okay although I had a lot of trouble getting into the characters. The second half went downhill fast. Maybe it's just not my kind of book. I don't need to have a happy end but the end of this one was just depressing and made me kind of angry I had waisted my time reading this book. Guess I'll stick to Mom and Dad's from now on.

Nice beach read. Nothing to write home about but I enjoyed it. The end surprised me a little which is always nice.

I picked this one up over vacation not expecting much but really enjoyed it. One of the blurbs says "a slow-burning, sunbaked noir treat" and that about captures it. It's well-written, with characters you care about, and a pace that is never rushed, but not slow either. This is a mystery that kept me guessing up till the end.

Sunstroke
Jesse Kellerman
Suspence
copyright: 2006
isbn: 0-14-305840-1

The blazingly original novel from the most exciting new voice in crime fiction today-a brilliantly crafted modern noir filled with secrets, heartbreak, and mordant humor.

Gloria Mendez is single and thirty-six, and secretly and somewhat hopelessly in love with her oblivious boss. He is both single and solitary, and far too old for her, but she has worked for him, side by side, for ten oddly companionable years. But when he disappears on his annual trip to Mexico-the one aspect of his life to which she's never been privy-Gloria's sudden and impulsive search for him reveals the wreckage of a hidden past. Carl Perreira was not who Gloria thought he was-nor was he anything she could have imagined.

As Gloria travels this twisted road into Carl's backstory, she realizes she might not have known him at all. Her investigation discloses as much about her own life as it does about her mysterious boss-and leaves her fighting for her life. Sunstroke is everything a thriller should be: circuitous, thought provoking, and brimming with edge-of-the-seat suspense-and the start of a brilliant career.

2.5 stars. Not bad for a debut novel, and OK as a mystery, but I wouldn't call it a thriller. Slow paced to start with, it didn't get really interesting until more than a third of the way in, when I was about to call it quits. Even towards the end there's only about 20 pages where the tension really ratchets up, and that has a 10-page flashback in the middle. So overall, meh.

This one surprised me. I didn't expect much and it turned out to have a lot of engaging twists and turns. Not the best writing and occasionally goes off on long, pointless bits of dialog but I enjoyed listening to it.
