I don't know why I bother to read unreliable first-person narrator suspense novels. They really aren't my jam, and yet sometimes, I just can't help myself. In this one, Alice and her partner Leo move into a gated community where *something* happened. And Alice decides to take it upon herself to figure out what *actually* happened, which might not match what everyone says happened.
Alice and her decision-making skills are ridiculous. Why did she stay in the house when she was so uncomfortable? Why is she with Leo? Why is Leo so tolerant of Alice? Uggh, the book and its characters annoyed me. And yet, I finished it; towards the end, I even enjoyed it. The beginning was a total slog, though.

I got sunburnt, in march, in north wales, because I stayed outside too long invested in reading this book.
3.0 stars
I loved this authorās first novel (Behind Closed Doors) but have been consistently disappointed with all her subsequent novels. Iām rating this as 3 stars because it was a quick read and I wanted to see how it ended. A big con to this book was that the main character was pretty stupid. Not sure how else to explain someone who is obsessed about some things but then shows absolutely no self-preservation when confronted with obvious red flags. I canāt say much else without giving spoilers. Also, I get a bit turned off by convoluted explanations and OTT endings. Iām not sure how I feel about continuing on with this author.
