A fast read and good allegory/fable. I pretty much could tell what was going to happened but was still engaged and surprised as to how it was executed. Masterful.

  • pretty enjoyable to read, sometimes i forgot which animals were who but that was more on me than the book
  • i’d read it again and definitely annotate next time
  • interesting connections to communism and capitalism especially with the themes and ideas centralised around the cold war and west vs east ideologies (USA/USSR)
  • i would’ve LOVED to read this in school it would’ve been way more enjoyable compared to anything we were given

I first read this in high school and decided to reread with my child that is now reading it in high school. :)

It was fine. It was interesting enough to keep reading, but it didn't make me want to pick it up when I wasn't reading it. The allegory is definitely interesting and it was depressing at points. I probably won't reread.

I will start by saying that dystopian is not my thing. This book was very frustrating. So much death and stupidity and manipulatio and gaslighting. I understand that this is the point. But I still hate it. I understand why it was written, I respect the bluntness and simplicity in which this book presents itself. I did not believe it. It felt like the author had notes of which character was which and a layout of the world but i could not see it in my head. There are so many names and it’s confusing. This was definitly not for me. I understand and respect parts of it, but some parts are aggravating.

It definitly shows Comunism and class in a very blunt and simple way.

The last third of the book was very good. It made me feel helpless and speachless. It also made me think about the past, what was burried in time, hidden from us. (This is probably the reason why this is a classic because I definetly did not connect to the first 2/3ds of the book. That’s like 80 pages…)
The end left me with a terrible feeling.

Animal Farm was on a book challenge list and it was short, so I gave it a try. It has a lot of similarities to 1984, Orwell's best-known work, specifically the use of changing history to best suit the present, the use of a mouthpiece to speak for the ruler, and the use of scapegoats to cover when things go wrong. It was also dark and violent.

If you want to read an Orwellian look at the world, read 1984.
