Jabari Jumps

This new favorite of Trent's is about courage to try something new but also the patience it may take and the fear you may find when doing something new. And the dad's support is THE BEST!

What traits do we need to exhibit to reach our goals?

Good mentor text for personal narrative!

A very cute book full of wonderful illustrations! Reading it made me really happy, really wish I got to read this as a kid.

I love this book for three reasons.
1) I love that the Dad is a good guy and is the person that helps his son overcome a fear in a safe, respectful way. We need more good Dad books like this.
2) I love that the family swimming is African American. With the history in America of African Americans being pushed out of public pools it lead to a decline in African Americans learning to swim. This book tackles that stereotype by showing them at the pool, in the pool, and talking about finishing swim lessons.
3) I love the page where Jabari's toes curl around the edge of the diving board. I love the words and I love the illustration of his toes and the pool way down there where you can find his Dad and sister.

What a great read aloud.

Courage

This is the second time we read this book, and it is one that we really enjoy. Jabari's story is relatable, and funny. Love the interaction with dad.

Really cute story about being brave. I loved Jabari and his family. Monarch 2019 nominee.

Taking a leap of faith is a scary thing. At first Jabari is excited about the prospect of jumping off the high dive, but as he gets closer and closer, he wonders if this is such a good idea after all. With a little pep talk from his dad, Jabari finds his way back up to the top of the high dive, scared but courageous.

I used this one to teach small moments. A very cute one!
