Jabari wants to jump off the high dive, but he is a little scared. SO many literacy lessons are embedded in this beautiful book of bravery.

I like how this book shows you how to face your fears and have fun at the some time

Great book to read to students and discuss courage. My special education students really liked this book and it made the concept of courage really easy to understand and led to some great discussions.

It must be challenging to write and illustrate a book that tackles the concept of fear. You would have to make it real enough to be relatable but not scary enough that it further reinforces the fear of the listener. Cornwall achieves this middle ground, providing bibliotherapy for children afraid of the diving board and/or with other fears of new and daring experiences. I could feel the rough edge of the board when she describes Jabari just before he dives in. His father and baby sister wait in the pool at the bottom and celebrate Jabari's bravery.

Jabari has passed his swimming class and test and is ready to jump off the diving board. However, when he gets to the pool his fears start to get the better of him. While he tries to act like he's not scared, his dad knows better and offers a suggestion.

A cute story about facing fears and how it feels to overcome them. Complemented nicely with mixed media illustrations.
