At first it bored me a bit, then from the middle on I was blown away, then it threw me into a spiral of depressive brooding, then I was enthralled again, and right after that I was bored again. This continued in faster and faster succession, until at the end I put the book aside, half perplexed, half impressed.

I cannot yet judge whether it is good or bad to read biographical material by Thomas Bernhard alongside his prose works. On the one hand, one sees more dimensions in the texts when one knows how the author had lived and thought; on the other hand, I can't help but associate what is said in the text with the author's person (some passages seem familiar to me in this way or in similar phrasing from some memoir books or interviews). Especially the way he writes about women does not necessarily help my reading pleasure. I keep vacillating between a "just shut up man" and great interest in the psychological or philosophical worldview presented, which I can't quite see through yet. He sometimes sounds like a teenager throwing a tantrum, then almost wise, then I laugh at how the characters' actions are depicted, which almost borders on slapstick comedy.

The narrative, however, seems more puzzled together than in the later books, it contains too many components and symbols and thus creates more confusion than fascination. But then again, fascination still. I can already foresee that I will torture myself with further books by Thomas Bernhard. Right now I'm itching to open my laptop again and order "Auslöschung", also the biggest of his works. Well, the end is not a process, as we know.

A tough, exhausting read that is choke full with repetition, which in its own awkward way draws readers into the heart of the story and keeps us in trepidation of the doom that we know is approaching from the very beginning. I can't really say that I "liked" this book but it is surely impactful in so many ways.

I'm watching at the rating of this book and reading some of the reviews and I start to wonder if I read the same book as everyone else. 250 pages of phrases that go on for entire pages, constant repetitions, basically no structure whatsoever and a "plot" that pretty much is inexistent. As soon as the book seems to get better, it is quickly back to the mentally exhausting repetition of words, phrases, concepts. If you take out the word "Altensam" from the book, you end up taking away half of its length. If the intent of the author was to drive the reader to madness, then it almost worked in my case.

3.5 - Unique read, glad I read it, but I would never recommend it to anyone…definitely not a must-read. A little bummed because I thought the premise had so much potential.

Assim. Duro. Encantador....
