huh.

content warnings for sexism, racism, dodgy medical power imbalances, and probably more. while there are good environmentalism ideas within this book, many elements reminded me of a local cult in the worst ways possible.

While profound and nearly revolutionary, I find myself more despairing and enraged at the state of the country than I was before reading this book.

got more into it at the end but a lot of the sections dragged on a lot and was kinda hard for me to stay engaged/enjoy it

Wirklich sehr bereichernd!

At times I found the “columns” a bit too long and dry. I enjoyed the personal development that the narrator went through.

zellie8's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 43%

Super sexist, out-of-this-world misogyny. 'Noble Savage' racism. Anti-science. Xenophobic. A horrible dystopia with a veneer of a few forward-thinking ideas masquerading as a utopia. I know this is a book of its time/era, but holy gods.

Clearly incredibly relevant for its time - ministry for the future looks like child's play in comparison.

It is quite dated (and one hopes the author would be a little more... Progressive if he wrote these days) and certainly the writing is not as good as many other books.
Part of that is the focus on the US.

But it remains extremely interesting to understand that concepts of secession, ecological socialism and so on were quite so present at the time already.
(Even if not really giving credit to where these cultures come from!)

So, very interesting if you're into understanding modern thought towards socioecological transition - but not that great otherwise.

Read this in tandem with ecotopia emerging so will repeat the review.

Coincidentally, I choose to re-read this for the first time since college (early 90s) a week before it was profiled in the NYT. I always
knew I was a trendsetter.

I'm a sucked for fake journals/ article type books. I even wrote my own in junior high as if I was stranded on a desert island and only had Campbell Soup labels to write on. Turned it in rolled up in a soda bottle. Anyway, on with the review.

This book MUST be read in the context of original publication date" 1975.
Both the crazy ass sexism and separatist racism, as well as the sexually free aspect of the people, are a product of that time and somewhat holdovers from hippie stereotypes. This book is not a modern HOW TO at all despite the actual scientific research he did for the technical sections. Yeah, I'd love to see biodegradable plastic and the end of poisoning the land on a grand scale but it ain't gonna happen in a world where workers smoke pot all day and have sex with whoever.

I propose this book can help to start to get a conversation rolling on 21st century ways to fix this planet.
